An introduction to chemical imaging
An introduction to chemical imaging

Near Infrared Chemical Imaging, also known as NIR Chemical Imaging, is an exciting new analytical approach that enables the quantitative and spatial identification of chemical species in a sample. This non-destructive technique combines traditional near infrared spectroscopy with microscopic and macroscopic imaging.

The functionality of many advanced materials (both man-made and natural) is based on the intricate interaction between sample components. Changes in the spatial localization of components can cause undesirable performance characteristics. Therefore the ability to chemically identify as well as locate these components is invaluable when it comes to sample understanding.

The SyNIRgi Near Infrared Chemical Imaging (NIR-CI) systems deliver spatial and chemical information that, coupled with the ISys data analysis software, provides answers to the questions ‘What?’, ‘How much?’, and ‘Where?’ A single rapid measurement enables the identification and spatial localization of sample components, which can then be correlated with a sample performance metric, such as dissolution.

By providing robust, reliable and automated data collection capabilities, coupled tightly with quantitative, statistical, objective, reproducible and automated data processing tools, NIR chemical imaging has moved rapidly from a specialized technology into a routine and highly desirable quantitative analytical tool.

Properties such as chemical domain characteristics, distribution of components, polymorph distribution and content, degree of hydration, location of contaminants or coating and layer thickness can all be determined. This knowledge can be used to design and manufacture products with superior performance and also to reduce the issues associated with product scale-up. The ability to characterize both the spatial and chemical properties of a sample can also be used for root cause analysis of manufacturing issues.

Based on infrared array detector technology, NIR chemical imaging techniques bypass the time consuming data acquisition associated with mapping technologies. Spatial, chemical, structural, and functional information can be derived from a single sample within a matter of minutes. Near infrared spectra are collected for each pixel on the array detector, creating a three dimensional cube consisting of both spatially resolved spectra and wavelength dependent images. The complete integration of spatial and spectral information quite literally adds a new dimension to data analysis: the ability to simultaneously examine the interdependency of the chemical and physical attributes of a sample or manufactured product. This new dimension forms the basis for unique information that cannot be obtained from other analytical methods.

NIR Chemical Imaging - Spectral Dimensions SyNIRgi

Spectral Dimensions SyNIRgi
The SyNIRgi is available in two configurations, the standard version providing spectral coverage from 1200-2450 nm, and the SyNIRgi−S, a short wavelength version from 950 – 1720 nm. Designed with routine analytical measurements in mind, SyNIRgi increases productivity by adding significant capability for rapid acquisition of sample data. Typical applications range from pharmaceutical tablets and granules, to grains and seeds, to household and consumer products.
